Congratulations to our school angry nation team, sweeping all before them in today's Zone 6 championships. It was a rough day's running for Narnie, Teegs and Keno, who came respectable double digit places in their races.

New Post

Just realised that there hasn't been a post on the blog for a while. Since we're having trouble with "spies" in the room, we'll use this site as a clue gathering spot for Murder Under the Microscope. What ever we do, let's not let the other teams know about the secret clue about the green tree frog and the Eden Lakes development we found in Google Earth at Flooding Creek.

Rain Day

What a great day of rain! Here's some snaps from this afternoon, in and around the school.

Cluster Map Challenge

As you can see, we have drawn a couple of vists from North America. Do you have any family o/s? Ask if they can visit the site and we'll see if we can get some more "dots" from around the world!

Melfare Mail

Last term, the motion was passed in Year 7 Parliament that the Melfare Mail would be sent by email to those who wished to receive it electronically. The purpose of doing so was to reduce the number of hard copies printed, our way of helping the environment. As our motto says, "We care, we're Melfare."

To that end, if you wish to receive your Melfare Mail by email and in *colour*, send a blank email to melfaremail@yahoo.com.au and we will add you to the mailing list. Alternatively, if you still wish to receive the paper newsletter in B&W, then write your name on the list in your classroom.

Upcoming Work

Garbage to Gucci.

Students are now planning and creating an outfit to wear in the presentation at this year's festival. They are to look around the house for recycled materials that can be used to create the outfit and bring these to school where time will be allocated for construction. The completed outfit is due by Thursday, June 11.

Brochures.

As part of the Murder Under the Microscope (MUM) investigation, students are making a brochure on a MUM topic; either a victim, villain or crimesite. Step one is a brochure enquiry, where the student selects a topic and asks "What are five questions that I would expect to be answered in a brochure on this topic?" They then ask the same question to three others and collect their responses.

As an aid to developing questions, you may access the MUM website (2009), go to the teacher's area, follow the Resources link and then the specific topic activity card. These cards also provide links to valuable information on the topic.

From these 20 questions, students choose their top 5. These are the questions that they will research and publish in their brochure.

Short Story Collection

In class we are writing a collection of short stories. They are being edited here and the good copies will be compiled by the students and presented as their own collection.

Hope this is of assistance.

Certificates

Congratulations to the following students who successfully completed the quizzes.

7W Short Film Festival

Calling all budding movie makers! For our catchment management plan for Murder Under the Microscope I would like the class to submit an animation. To do this, we need to find our best and brightest animators. Below are the links to two online animation sites, but if you know of another, feel free to use it. Over the next two weeks, I invite you to create an animation on whatever topic you like. If you can capture the code, paste it into the comment box and we'll upload it for the class to see. You have until Friday, May 29.

As part of this task, critically analyse the animation software. Was it easy to use? Did it take long? Were there many options for characters, settings etc? Would it be suitable for our Catchment Management Plan.

Finally, all entries in the competition will go in the running to win an illustrious prize. Good luck, and happy animating!

What was he thinking? (Part 2)

Some more videos from today.

What was he thinking?

So this week you have been asked whether it is ok to lie, and the overwhelming response was that at times it is necessary. Looking at the story of Peter's denial of Jesus, we investigated the internal reasoning that Peter may have used to deny that he knew Jesus. Here are your videos.

Lying

Here's a thought...when is it ok to lie?

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

I dare you to try these...

Many people say that they dislike a particular subject when in fact what they are really saying is that they find it difficult. If we know what we are good at and what we have to work at, then half the battle is over. The challenge is to accept that if we're not good at something, we have to work harder at it to succeed, just like Pete Persistence!

That being said, here's a site that covers different areas of maths and has some straight forward explainations. Let us know how you went if you have a go. Also, if you find any other sites that are good maths sites, put the link into a comment.

Now we just have to find a site that makes Japanese easy!

MUM Clues for Tuesday

So we've started scratching the surface of the investigation. Here are some leads that we have uncovered:

The green people are Bill, Steve and Larry. Is it a coincidence that these are the names of three of the world's richest people?
Agent X is described as a toad
The crime sites could be in Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia
Danno is in Thailand
Ramsar Wetlands are in Victoria
X is back and feeling bodacious
We have 9 codewords and are missing the one for salinity

Gotta Love Chocolate

For no educational purpose, I offer the best ad of 2009.
